It can be overwhelming for an artist to break into the art scene with little or no prior experience.  One’s mind is overloaded with questions:

Where do I start? How do I start? How much will it cost me? How much can I make as an artist?

Brian Marshall White is an artist himself who has successfully navigated his way into the art world and permanently set up shop. Through trial and error he created a business selling his artwork that allows him to support his family and pursue his passion of painting.

I, myself, am an artist and have been searching the internet far and wide for the information I have now finally found in this book. I read several reviews that read similar to the one I am writing here and decided to order this book and see if the reviews were accurate.

Here is the scoop:

White has found a realistic and promising formula to make a living as an artist and has written “Breaking Into the Art World” to show you exactly how he has done that. Art careers are possible!

This book is an easy read that is jam packed with instructions for the artist who has created their body of art and is eager to get out there and make a living as an artist. He takes a very transparent approach and generously provides you with references and names of actual suppliers and companies he has worked with and recommends to help get you on your way.

Topics covered in this book include:

  • Building an Income
  • Reproducing your Art
  • Making Prints
  • Mat Boards and Matting
  • Budgeting
  • Pricing
  • Galleries
  • Consignment
  • Internet
  • Computer Software

Brian Marshall White is very honest in his writing, clearly noting on several occasions that what will work for one artist may not work for another. However, he explains to you exactly what has worked for him and how.

What his direct and open writing in this book does is give you a clear map of how you can start and pave your own way as a professional artist.

Personally speaking, I finished this book very quickly and can honestly say that I have experienced a boost of confidence after reading this book. Brian Marshall White has really provided me with a concrete sense of direction.

The adage “knowledge is power” really applies to this book. White doesn’t waste your time with anecdotes or accolades. Instead, he takes a no b.s. approach to tell you exactly what you need to do and how.

This book is highly recommended for any artist who is unsure of how to start their career in the art world. If you’ve been around the block and know your way in and out of the art world, this book will be of little use to you. The focus of “Breaking Into the Art World” is mainly for the artist who has honed their artistic skills and is in search for the business savvy.

Brian Marshall White will give you step by step instructions from preparing your materials, packaging, display, all the way through to sales, costing, selling on consignment, and art galleries. He even takes the time to talk about HTML and web development.

He is optimistic but also extremely realistic- and most importantly- he is a fellow artist who started from the beginning without any traditional artist training. Still, with his artistic talent and determined mind, this artist found a very realistic way to not only make it work but make it work well.

The book carries a positive tone throughout because Brian Marshall White wants you to know that with a little bit of hard work and dedication to your craft, you too can make a living as an artist and break into the art world.

Most artists have an uncommon lack of business sense. Sounds like this book might help some of them with the practical things they need to know.

It's true. This book really simplifies and demystifies some of the tougher business questions many artists have.

Sounds like a useful book. Most of the artists I know are fairly clueless when it comes to selling their work. Myself included!
