Hair Growth Tips ❘ Natural Solutions For Hair Loss - How Can I Prevent Hair From Falling Out?

By

Uh Oh. My Hair!

If you are looking for the cause of premature hair loss, you may not need to look further than your shampoo. Conventional shampoos are mostly comprised of chemicals that have the sole purpose of harshly scrubbing the hair, creating a lather, and then add a touch of chemical fragrance for effect.

Did you know that there is a common misconception that we need our shampoo to "lather" in order for our hair to be clean? This is simply just not true and something we have just learned to believe.

If you are experiencing hair loss, it's time to get a better shampoo.

What is a better shampoo? To start, it is a good rule of thumb to find a "natural" or "organic" shampoo. "Natural" can mean all sorts of things today so if you want to take the confusion out of it, opt for organic.

Is there really a difference between a regular shampoo and an organic one? You bet. It can be night and day for your hair and if you're looking to curb hair loss, you better get on this train!

Avalon Organics Biotin B-Complex Shampoo and Conditioner

If you're looking for a natural shampoo for hair growth, I recommend Avalon Organics. This shampoo and conditioner has biotin which is vital to hair growth and circulation. This brand has a tremendous following and for good reason. Also noteworthy is this shampoo and conditioner's scent. It has a very invigorating scent that is also calming and makes you feel that you had your hair washed at the spa!

A Consumer's Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients

My environmental biology professor back in college recommended that we pick up this book. Since then, I have referred to this book on a regular basis and keep it on my bookshelf when I'm not sure what I'm looking at.

I love the cover design and this easy to use dictionary is jam packed with valuable information for the savvy consumer. It makes for a great personal reference and also a great gift idea for someone you know that cares about their body.

My professor mentioned this book as she was discussing the idea that if you can't pronounce the name of an ingredient on the side of the bottle or you can't find the root word in a chain of long words, this is your first indication that you are dealing with a substance you probably shouldn't be dealing with.

Did you know that the skin absorbs up to 70% of what you put on it? Something to think about if your hair is on its way out...

My version of "A Consumer's Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients" by Ruth Winter is an older copy dating back to 2005. That was before all the hype and media attention on ingredients in shampoo.

Let's see what she had to say about an ingredient that is still very prevalent in shampoos today but has been removed from some brands because of its media attention. Note that unless your mom was a hippy, this ingredient has been in your shampoo since birth.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

"A detergent, wetting ingredient, and emulsifier widely used in bubble baths, emollient creams, cream depilatories, hand lotions, cold permanent waves, soapless shampoos, and toothpastes. Prepared by sulfation of lauryl alcohol followed by neutralization with sodium carbonate. It emulsifies fats.

May cause drying of the skin because of its degreasing ability, and is an irritant to the skin. Has been associated with eczema. On the basis of available information the CIR Expert Panel found it safe in the early 1980s but is considering new information to determine if the final safety assessment should be reaffirmed...(472)"

Ingredients such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate have since been proven to cause drying of the hair and breakage. This is no longer speculation. The joke about all those shampoos claiming to be for hair loss is that SLS tends to be the first ingredient listed! This is true for the popular hair loss shampoo Nioxin. Talk about being counterproductive!

Nourish Your Hair and Promote Hair Growth with Argan Oil

Of all the different varieties of oil available for cosmetic and dietary purposes, I believe argan oil to be a superstar among them. Argan oil has very high levels of vitamin E and it extremely nutritive and protective of the skin. Moroccans have being using argan oil for centuries and regularly massaging it in your hair will show you great benefits.

Argan Oil is known to be curative for the skin. Personally, I use it every day on my face (I know, I know, oil on your face?) But as counter-intuitive as it may sound, having put argon oil in a small amount on my face regularly has shown me a significant reduction in redness and break outs on my extremely sensitive skin. If you've never tried argon oil this may seem hard to believe but trust me, once you've used it, you too will believe.

What Else Can I Do For Hair Loss?

Have you been wearing the same hairstyle since you don't know when?

Change your part! If you've noticed that your hair line is receding from where you've kept your part for the last few years, this is a clear signal that it is time to change it up! Try parting your hair down the middle or if switching it from the left side to the right.

Scalp Massage!

Your follicles need circulation! Give them a rub! Take that extra minute to show your follicles some love when you're shampooing in the shower. They will thank you for it!

Don't Shampoo Daily

Washing your hair on a daily basis can strip the natural oils from the hair that you very much want! Feel free to condition as often as you like, but bust out the shampoo every few days.

Brushing and Drying

A good rule of thumb is to avoid brushing your hair when it is wet and allow it to air dry naturally. Even if you plan to blow dry or flat iron your hair, let it dry naturally first and then apply a protective serum to guard against thermal damage.

This is excellent advice. I found out from personal experience about over washing ones hair mine is now healthier and longer for it.

Women of color need to also note that because our hair is kinky doesn't mean it is heartier. Our hair is more delicate and more likely to fall out due to over washing, dying, hot combing, and usage of color products at the same time. Over washing is the biggest culprit because of the chemicals you've mentioned and the harshness of most shampoos.

If you must wash your hair daily due to oiliness I would recommend use of a dry shampoo. Excellent subject matter!!!

Great information! I never knew about the argon oil and want to try it out on my scalp. I have very gray hair these days..anything in particular you can suggest to keep my white and grey locks from getting too dry?

Super information - very well presented and easy to read. As a woman, I don't worry about hair loss (maybe yet?) but maybe I should be worried that I'm not worried... ;-)
